Statement by Harry E. Johnson, Sr.
President and CEO of The Memorial Foundation
Past General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated
on the Passing of Former United States
Senator Edward William Brooke III (R-MA)

“As President and CEO of The Memorial Foundation, builders of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC, I was saddened to hear of the passing of former U.S. Senator Edward Brooke. From the beginning of our efforts to build a memorial in honor of Dr. King, Senator Brooke consistently lent his unwavering support and counsel to the project, and he made the first individual donation to the Foundation. As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Senator Brooke on several occasions invited me and other fraternity brothers to visit with him at his home to discuss the Memorial and ways he could continue to champion the project. His dedication to the Memorial led the Foundation to honor Senator Brooke in 2006 with a lifetime achievement award for service.

On behalf of The Memorial Foundation’s board of directors, supporters and friends, our prayers and thoughts are with Senator Brooke’s devoted wife, Anne, and his entire family.”
